Protest action broke out at CPUT
A senior Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) security official remains in ICU after being struck on the head with a brick during violent student protests which erupted across several campuses on Wednesday night.
The protests, which resulted in two arrests and saw fires and property damage reported across different sites, form part of a student-led shutdown over financial pressures facing students and proposed changes contained in CPUT's Draft Financial Recovery Plan (FRP) for 2027.
By Thursday, calm had returned to campuses, with the university carrying out safety assessments, monitoring those injured during the unrest and assessing when face-to-face classes could resume.
CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley confirmed that the senior security official remained in ICU after sustaining a head injury during Wednesday's protest action.
