CAF President Patrice Motsepe reaffirmed Africa’s support for Gianni Infantino, calling for strict adherence to governance ahead of next year's Fifa election.
Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has urged caution and called for strict adherence to good governance as global football faces growing internal tensions surrounding Fifa President Gianni Infantino.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Wednesday night, Motsepe dismissed suggestions that global football is trapped in an internal conflict, insisting that proper democratic procedures must decide who leads the world governing body.
Infantino, who tried — and failed — to sell off part of the World Cup to private investors, came under renewed fire in an open letter signed by three confederations: Europe's Uefa, North and Central America's Concacaf, and Asia's AFC, accusing the world football boss of breaking trust "through deception".
"You’ve got to be very careful," Motsepe warned. "The Fifa election is taking place next year. Shouldn't we allow that process to continue, and let the 211 members decide? There are many times when a candidate I want to win doesn't win, but whoever wins, I’m going to support them."
