As South Africa's healthcare system faces critical staffing shortages, medical organisations urge the government to employ qualified unemployed doctors, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions to alleviate pressure on overworked healthcare professionals.
South Africa’s unemployed doctors could help ease pressure on an overstretched public healthcare system, where existing doctors are working excessive hours and staffing gaps are affecting service delivery and patient care.
This is the view of medical organisations who warned that existing doctors were being forced to carry excessive workloads, work extended shifts, and perform overtime to keep services functioning.
Health and Other Public Sector Employees’ Union of South Africa (HOSPERSA) Gauteng provincial secretary Nhlanhla Mthize said the organisation was concerned about the apparent contradiction between qualified doctors who remain unemployed and persistent shortages of doctors in the public healthcare system.
“The issue should not be viewed merely as an employment challenge, but as a healthcare system and patient safety concern," he said.
