Heavy to very heavy rain, with isolated extremely heavy falls, is set to continue over West Bengal today (Thursday), with heavy to very heavy rain forecast tomorrow (Friday) and heavy rain on Saturday, Independence Day, as a fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal prepares to intensify into a depression later today.The weather system had already strengthened into a well-marked low early Thursday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to extend similar heavy-rain alerts across neighbouring Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Fishermen have been advised to stay off the sea along the Odisha and West Bengal coasts through Friday.
The European EC-AIFS model suggests heavy rain belt (in blue) may recurve towards North-West India and the Himalayan foothills as the Bay depression weakens into the next week.
