Chris Vui, the former Manu Samoa Captain, has broken his silence for the first-time on the personal toll of his doping ban, revealing he was forced to set aside his pride to support his family after his rugby career plunged into uncertainty.
The period following his suspension was profoundly isolating, Vui states in responses provided to the Samoan Observer, "I had to come to terms with a situation I never saw coming,” he said.
“I couldn’t speak about it outside of my family, which made it a very isolating time.”
Vui was suspended after testing positive for 19-norandrosterone, a metabolite associated with nandrolone, in August 2023 before the Rugby World Cup in France.
He has denied knowingly taking a prohibited substance and has maintained that the low level detected in his sample was consistent with contamination from a supplement.
