Demis Hassabis, the co-founder who built DeepMind into one of the world’s most respected AI labs before Google acquired it, is stepping away from the CEO role. He becomes Chair and Chief Scientist at Alphabet.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind’s Chief Technology Officer, moves up to Senior Vice President. He now owns the day-to-day: Gemini model development, research team management, and whatever fires need putting out before the next product launch.
A split that makes sense on paper
Sundar Pichai’s internal memo framed the change as separating operational execution from long-term strategic work. The restructure gives Kavukcuoglu clear ownership over Gemini’s trajectory, removing the ambiguity that can slow decisions when a visionary founder is technically still in charge.
