The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Mrs. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, has charged Nigerian youths to move beyond being mere beneficiaries of democracy and assume their rightful place as active stakeholders, custodians and builders of the nation’s democratic future.
Omidiran gave the charge in a goodwill message delivered on her behalf by the Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State in the FCC, Hon. Peter Ogbonna Eze, at a programme organised by the Nigeria Youth Organization with the theme, ‘The Role of Nigerian Youth in Consolidating the Gains of Democracy in Nigeria.’
The FCC chairman described the theme as timely and fundamental to the future of Nigeria, stressing that the sustainability and progress of the country’s democracy would depend substantially on the commitment, character, participation and leadership of the younger generation.
According to her, Nigerian youths possess the energy, creativity, innovation and intellectual capacity required to drive national development, adding that they must recognise that democracy extends beyond periodic elections.
She said democratic consolidation also requires respect for the rule of law, accountability, tolerance, peaceful participation, responsible citizenship, protection of fundamental rights and respect for Nigeria’s diversity.
