It is the third named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, and other systems are brewing in the Atlantic.Tropical Storm Cristobal has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, but not in the place you might have expected if you've been watching tropical storm activity closely.Cristobal has formed from an area of disturbed weather about 1,050 miles east-northeast of Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center said just before 11 a.m. on Aug. 12, and not from the wave far to the south. The center plans to begin advisories at 11 a.m.Hurricane season in the Atlantic is just hitting its peak period, and the hurricane center is watching at least two other potential areas of development.One of those is an area of disturbed weather moving toward the Caribbean in the Atlantic, and many were expecting it to be Cristobal, but the tiny storm far to the southwest of the Azores beat that system to the third spot on the 2026 list of hurricane names. The westward-moving system is still far to the west, about 900 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, and is expected to become a tropical depression within 48 hours. The next name up on the center's 2026 name rotation for the Atlantic is Dolly.Satellite data shows Cristobal is producing tropical storm-force winds to its southeast, but it's expected to be short-lived, given its location in the Atlantic.Cristobal is forecast to move eastward to east-northeastward at an estimated 20 mph across the central subtropical Atlantic, the hurricane center's forecast said.In other news, the hurricane center also expects to begin to issue advisories on a storm in the Central Pacific, about 1,000 miles east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands, dubbing it Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C.
