Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A high school football player in Arkansas noticed something unusual about his helmet and brought it to coaches who discovered a venomous snake hiding under the padding.

Maumelle High School Athletic Director Kirk Horton said the player noticed unusual movement inside his helmet after warmups at a recent practice and brought it to a defensive coach.

Horton and the coaches looked under the helmet's padding and discovered an approximately 2-foot-long snake that turned out to be a venomous cottonmouth.

"It really was just shock and disbelief," Horton told KARK-TV. "I've got a better shot at winning the lottery than seeing this in my ten years."

The coaches placed the helmet into a bag and contacted Maumelle Animal Services.
