MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang has declared September 11 a special non-working holiday in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) to recognize the 40th anniversary of the 1998 ‘Sipat’ or the cessation of hostilities in the region.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. issued Proclamation No. 1389, which declared September 11, Friday, as a special non-working day, following the request of the Regional Development Council-Cordillera, and Apayao Governor Elias Bulut Jr.
The day commemorates the peace talks that transpired between the national government and representatives of the Cordillera Bodong Administration and the Cordillera People’s Liberation Army to formally signify the Sipat, as well as acknowledge their aspirations for Cordillera autonomy on September 13, 1998.
