Lithuania’s government on Wednesday amended its plan for counter-mobility measures, establishing a new defence zone along the country’s borders with Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad region.
Under the revised plan, a 20-meter-wide counter-mobility strip will extend from the border patrol road into Lithuanian territory. In areas designated by the military for operations, the strip will be widened to 150 meters.
The changes come as Lithuania expands its network of defences intended to slow or prevent the movement of hostile forces and military equipment in the event of an attack.
The government has pushed back the deadline for completing engineering equipment parks at designated military sites to the end of 2028, from the original April 2025 target.
The Defence Ministry said the extension was necessary because the number of planned parks has increased from 27 to 50. The expanded network will require additional time to implement, while state-owned rail infrastructure company LTG Infra has also been tasked with providing storage facilities for the engineering equipment.
