Lithuania has extended restricted airspace zones along its border with Belarus until January 1, 2027, citing continued hybrid threats and recent drone incidents in the region.

The transport ministry said the six-month extension of 12 border zones was made at the request of the Lithuanian armed forces. Flights within the restricted areas are prohibited except under procedures authorised by the chief of defence.

Transport Minister Juras Taminskas said the security environment had not improved.

"Hybrid attacks from Belarus and recent drone incidents in Lithuania and neighbouring countries show that the threats have not disappeared. We must be prepared to respond to any violations of our airspace," he said.

The restricted zones can be activated as needed to enable a rapid military response to airspace violations, including the use of force against unmanned aircraft.
