The federal government has until 1 October to come up with solutions to address the issue
Belgium’s transport minister has vowed to propose measures to reduce noise pollution from Brussels Airport, as residents step up legal action over planes flying above their homes.
One of the disputed routes passes over densely populated parts of Brussels, including Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Koekelberg. Campaign group Free Air 4 Brussels (FA4B) estimates that between 270,000 and 400,000 people live under the flight path.
“After years of stagnation, only a comprehensive political decision can provide a sustainable way forward,” Jean-Luc Crucke said on Tuesday.
His comments, as reported by the Belgian news agency Belga, came after 42 families from three municipalities in western Brussels –Dilbeek, Lennik and Roosdaal – announced they would take the Belgian state to court. They argue that a relatively new flight route has brought far more aircraft noise to their neighbourhoods.
