OpenAI brings its ChatGPT desktop app to Linux. The preview dropped on Tuesday, bundling ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the Codex coding agent into a single package. It runs on Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44, with .deb and .rpm packages for both x64 and ARM64. The built-in browser, Chrome extensions, and voice control are all included.
Native computer use is missing, though. That means controlling desktop apps like GIMP or OpenOffice isn't possible yet. Appshots, Record & Replay, and voice commands for desktop apps also won't be available at launch, according to an OpenAI spokesperson.
The Mac and Windows versions shipped in July. The Codex CLI and an IDE extension already worked on Linux before this release. The app mainly adds a visual interface for tracking multiple projects, files, and code changes. For terminal users, the CLI remains the more direct option. The app is available worldwide.
