Image: Kalle Niskala / YleYle News14:56A baby was born on VR's Helsinki-Vaasa IC49 intercity service on Tuesday evening, Finland's state-owned railway company has confirmed in a press release.VR communications manager Tiina Nummenmaa said the on-board birth was an "exceptional and joyous" event, noting that there is no known record of a baby being born on a VR train in the past."VR warmly congratulates the family on this special moment," she said.Tabloid Ilta-Sanomat reported that a fellow passenger assisted the mother during the birth, adding that an ambulance was waiting for the newborn when the train arrived in Seinäjoki.Nummenmaa noted that VR staff are trained to help passengers in exceptional circumstances, and in this situation she said the crew handled the situation calmly and professionally.Despite the arrival of a newborn on the service, IC49 continued on schedule.
