Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Tuesday in Washington as the two countries push to reach an agreement before 50% tariffs on Canadian goods take effect on August 19.
LeBlanc and Canada's Chief Trade Negotiator Janice Charette attended the meeting, the third between the two sides in as many weeks, according to Reuters. "We remain committed at the negotiating table and continue to work diligently to advance and staunchly defend Canadian interests," LeBlanc wrote on social media after the session concluded.
Canadian and U.S. trade representatives are aiming to present a framework for a deal to President Donald Trump before the deadline, according to BNN Bloomberg. Items on the table include eliminating Canada's retaliatory auto tariffs, lifting provincial restrictions on American alcohol sales, and reworking the structure of dairy quota arrangements. When asked about the talks on his way into meetings Tuesday, LeBlanc told reporters he felt "great."
