President Donald Trump on Tuesday made one of his clearest statements yet that he understands he cannot run for reelection in 2028. “Are you serious about seeking a third term?” a reporter asked on the tarmac after disembarking Air Force One on Tuesday night. “Everybody asks me that question,” said Trump, who sells Trump 2028 merch and posts Trump 2028 images and memes all the time despite being expressly forbidden from running again by the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.Trump said: “The law is very strong on that. I’d love to run, but the law is very strong. I get asked by everyone, even tonight, they’re screaming at the event, ‘2028!’ No, everybody wants me to do it, but the law is very strong.” Since returning to office, Trump has repeatedly toyed with the notion of running again in 2028. AP Photo/Mark SchiefelbeinHe told NBC News last year that “there are methods” that would allow him to run again. “I’m not joking,” Trump said.Longtime Trump insider Steve Bannon last year insisted Trump would run again and win. “He’s gonna get a third term,” Bannon told The Economist. “Trump is gonna be president in ’28, and people just ought to get accommodated with that.”Earlier this year, Trump shared an image saying a third term should be a “reward” for a “stolen” election, and, at another point, said he was “entitled” to another term in office.But Trump has also indicated at times that he understands he cannot run again. “I would say that if you read it, it’s pretty clear,” he said last year. “I’m not allowed to run.
