Chelsea have made Pep Chavarría their ninth signing of the summer, bringing in the Spanish left back from Rayo Vallecano for a total package worth €21 million. The deal, which includes €19 million fixed and €2 million in performance-related add-ons, fills a gap that opened when Marc Cucurella departed for Real Madrid earlier this window.
Chelsea sold Cucurella for roughly €60 million, then reinvested about a third of that on a proven La Liga defender who has quietly built one of the more consistent resumes among left backs in Spanish football.
Who is Pep Chavarría?
Josep María “Pep” Chavarría Pérez is a 28-year-old, left-footed defender standing 1.74 meters tall. Born on April 10, 1998, he made his La Liga debut at the age of 24. He joined Rayo Vallecano in August 2022 and quickly became a fixture in the squad. Over his time in Vallecas, Chavarría accumulated more than 105 La Liga appearances. His contract at Rayo ran until 2030, which explains why the Spanish club was able to command a respectable fee despite Chavarría not being a household name across Europe.
