A landslide hit the Kurla region in Mumbai eastern suburb in the early hours of Wednesday (August 12, 2026), killing at least six people and injuring four others. Rescue operations are under way to trace those trapped under the debris.Two people are trapped under the debris, Deputy Chief Fire Brigade K.R. Yadav said as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with 50 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation personnel continued rescue efforts.The BMC reported this as a level-II incident which occurred around 3:48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical in Kurla West. The soil and debris from the hillside collapsed onto two to three houses, resulting in loss of life and property damage, according to Mayor Ritu Tawde, who visited the site to inspect opertions.Two of the deceased, identified as Sohel Ansari (18) and Mohamad Ansari (14), were sent to Rajawadi Hospital. CMO Dr. Vishal declared Mohamad as brought dead, while Sohel sustained head injuries. Among those dead are four members of a family, including two children, one female and a male. They have been taken to Rathod Medical, Kurla West. “Debris fell on nearby rooms of the chawl structure. As per witnesses, six to eight persons were trapped under the debris,” a BMC official said.On ground, two divisional fire officers (DFO), assistant divisional fire officer (ADFO), two senior station officers (SrSO), four station officers, four fire engines, two fire tenders, two rescue vehicles, two mobile water tankers, one water quick response vehicle have joined the rescue operation. “The site of the incident and the route leading to it are extremely narrow, allowing only one person to pass at a time. BMC officers, employees and workers, along with the Mumbai Fire Brigade, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Mumbai Police, are making every possible effort to rescue people trapped under the debris,” Ms. Tawade said.Further, Ms. Tawde announced ₹4 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹50,000 assistance for each injured person. She met the affected families, offered her condolences, directing all the agencies present at the site to expedite the relief and rescue operation.Ward Committee Chairman Vijayendra Shinde, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Avinash Dhakane, Assistant Commissioner (In-charge), L Ward, Anil Jadhav, were present at the spot.With inputs from Yohaan Varghese Published - August 12, 2026 09:12 am IST
