KORONADAL CITY — Face-to-face classes in all public elementary and secondary schools in nearby General Santos City “may resume anytime soon” as schools prepare to return to in-person learning following the recent earthquakes.The possible resumption was announced during a joint press conference by the city government and the Department of Education (DepEd), which was also streamed live on DepEd GenSan’s social media account on Tuesday afternoon.
The press conference was attended by officials and representatives from the city government, DepEd, police, fire and disaster response offices, engineering and building offices, and the city’s Parents and Teachers Association federation.

Schools have been directed to strictly follow their safety plans, including using only classrooms that have been checked and cleared for use, holding short emergency drills every day, and having clear procedures for reuniting students with their families after an emergency.Mervie Y. Seblos, DepEd General Santos City assistant schools division superintendent, reported that 2,846 (77.4%) of the city’s 3,679 classrooms had been found safe for use. Another 833 classrooms (22.6%) were declared unsafe and will not be used by the students.Because there may not be enough safe classrooms for all students, school heads have been allowed to choose the learning setup that fits their situation./coa
