Retro fans had to wait almost 15 years, but it's finally happening: Hyperkin is bringing its mobile retro console “SupaBoy” across the pond. Two new transparent color variants will be available in Europe from autumn this year. The SupaBoy is not a pure emulator and does not require digitized console games in the form of ROMs or other additional software. Region locks are also said to be no obstacle.

Instead, a SoC replaces the original console's hardware in the SupaBoy. Players simply insert their old Super Nintendo cartridges into the slot and can start playing. According to the manufacturer, cartridges from Japan, the USA, and Europe work equally well. The company does not state whether titles with special chips like the Super FX will also run cleanly.

Color games with Famicom nostalgia

Hyperkin draws on Nintendo's history for the colors. The retro-gray “Prime” is reminiscent of the Super Famicom or Super Nintendo version released in Japan and Europe, while the red “Crimson” is reminiscent of the Japanese original version of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Both housings are semi-transparent and will be available for just under 130 Euros. The Crimson version is a limited edition and is intended to kick off annually changing special variants.
