Building a large-scale AI data center used to be a project measured in seasons. Alibaba Cloud wants to measure it in weeks.
The Chinese cloud giant has unveiled CUBE 5.0, a modular data-center architecture that it says can deliver fully operational AI data centers in just 100 days. For context, traditional construction timelines run 6 to 12 months in China and 12 to 18 months in the US. Alibaba Cloud is claiming it can compress that entire process into roughly three months, while cutting overall construction costs by more than 10%.
How 90% prefabrication changes the math
The core innovation behind CUBE 5.0 is a dramatic increase in how much of a data center gets built before anyone breaks ground on site. Five essential systems, covering power supply, cooling, security, intelligent management, and fire protection, now arrive 90% prefabricated. Previous versions of the CUBE architecture managed roughly 30% prefabrication across those same systems.
Alibaba Cloud is also planning to more than double its global modular data-center production capacity in 2026 to keep pace with demand.
