Why heat makes people more aggressive, why it disrupts sleep so specifically — the questions heat researchers are still actively working through

The relationship between heat and cognitive and behavioral function is one of the more consistently documented but incompletely explained areas of environmental neuroscience: researchers have established clear, repeated correlations between elevated temperature and specific changes in mood, aggression, sleep, and cognitive performance across dozens of studies and, in several cases, decades of data, but the precise biological mechanisms underlying several of these well-documented effects remain genuinely unresolved, debated among researchers, or supported by competing hypotheses that current evidence hasn't yet definitively separated.

This gap between documented correlation and understood mechanism matters because it's easy to assume that a well-established statistical relationship (heat correlates with increased aggression, heat correlates with worse sleep) implies an equally well-established explanation for why the relationship exists, when in several of the cases in this list, the correlation is considerably more solid than any single accepted mechanism explaining it.
