Singh will continue to be a trustee on the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust
Vijay Singh, Vice-Chairman of Tata Trusts, has stepped down from his position at the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT), a philanthropic foundation managed by a board of trustees, three days before the end of his term.Singh’s term at the trust was supposed to end on August 14 and he has informed the trust about his desire not to seek a reappointment.Singh, however, will continue to be a trustee on the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), another foundation under that Tata Trusts umbrella. Together, these two trusts control over 52 per cent stake in Tata Sons, the group holding company of the salt-to-software conglomerate.Singh did not respond to queries on text message and email.Regulatory scrutinyA former IAS officer, Singh was inducted into the Tata Trusts in 2018. His exit from SRTT comes as it faces regulatory scrutiny over the composition of its board. The probe follows complaints by advocate Katyayani Agarwal. A second complaint was filed by Venu Srinivasan, a trustee with SRTT and the Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor Company. What next?Following the complaints, the Charity Commissioner of Maharashtra in May directed SRTT not to hold any meetings. Other Tata-controlled trusts are due to hold their quarterly board meeting on Thursday. The SRTT is reported to have written to the Charity Commissioner’s office seeking removal of restrictions which is reportedly hampering regular trust activities and disbursal of funds. Crucially, it has also created an uncertainty about the Tata Sons annual general meeting scheduled on August 18 as its articles of association require the presence of a representative nominated by the SRTT and SDTT.Published on August 11, 2026
