Vijay Singh, a Trustee of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT), may not be reappointed when his term ends on August 14 as the Trust has been directed by the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner (MCC) not to hold board meetings. The latter had, in an order on May 15, directed the Trust “not to hold any such meeting till submission of report of Inspector inquiry.”The MCC is holding an inquiry based on complaints from trustee Venu Srinivasan and advocate Katyayani Agrawal over the composition of the perpetual trustees on the board.SRTT and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) collectively hold 51.54 per cent stake in Tata Sons. Noel Tata, Venu Srinivasan, Jimmy Tata, Darius Khambatta and Jehangir HC Jehangir are the other trustees on SRTT, along side Vijay Singh.Speaking to businessline, Vijay Singh said he was not planning to seek reappointment anyway. “If the term ends, it ends. Regardless of the freeze, I would not have sought reappointment,” he told this correspondent. Asked for the reason, he said, “Matter is to do with age. I’m 78 and can’t go on forever.”Significantly, he also said he would not seek reappointment to any of the other trusts once his tenure there ends. Singh is a trustee on SDTT and several other smaller trusts. A former bureaucrat, Singh was inducted into the Tata Trusts by Ratan Tata in 2018. In recent times, he was seen as ranged against Noel Tata, in association with Venu Srinivasan.Singh’s exit from SRTT will not immediately help Noel Tata as he cannot replace Singh until MCC lifts the freeze. Noel Tata will also need unanimous board approvals for new appointments, which appear unlikely given the fractures within. The situation will change over the next few months with Khambatta’s term ending in November and Venu Srinivasan’s in December.Meanwhile, the ensuing annual general meeting of Tata Sons on August 18 could come under a shadow unless the MCC lifts the board meeting freeze on SRTT, which is a major voting shareholder in Tata Sons.Published on July 21, 2026
