Google’s AI Overviews feature has been live in France for only a few weeks, and French publishers are already at the regulator’s door. The Alliance de la Presse d’Information Générale, known as APIG, filed a formal complaint with France’s Autorité de la concurrence on August 11, 2026, targeting the AI-generated article summaries that began appearing in French search results in late July 2026.

The complaint is not a minor procedural filing. APIG represents around 300 French daily newspapers, and the group is arguing that AI Overviews are structurally harmful to the press sector, not just mildly inconvenient.

Traffic losses that would make any publisher wince

The numbers behind the complaint are striking. French publishers say AI Overviews have already cut referral traffic to their sites by between 33% and 38%.

The mechanism is straightforward enough. AI Overviews synthesize content from publisher websites and present it as a self-contained answer at the top of a search results page. The user gets informed; the publisher gets nothing, not a visit, not an ad impression, not a subscription prompt.
