Gardaí investigating a crash on the M50 which hospitalised nine people on Sunday are examining links to a prominent vehicle theft syndicate operating in west Dublin known as the Lucky Dip Gang.

Gardaí believe video footage on the phones of some of the teenagers involved in the crash may be key to their investigation.

The Toyota Yaris involved had been stolen from the Rathmines area and was spotted by gardaí in several parts of south and west Dublin on Sunday morning.

Eight teenagers were in the five-seater car when it crashed into another car while driving the wrong way down the M50 at 5.30am. It is understood the vehicle was travelling above the 100km/h speed limit on the road.

Gardaí are attempting to establish whether some of the teenagers were linked to or inspired by the Lucky Dip Gang, with the incident fitting the profile of the group’s actions.
