Drains carrying wastewater from nearby residential areas to Periyakulam along the Selvapuram–Perur Bypass Road in Coimbatore have been clogged with solid waste, raising concerns over open dumping and poor maintenance.The drains are filled with plastic waste, household garbage and other debris, severely restricting the flow of water. Residents alleged that waste was being dumped openly into the drains and that the accumulated garbage was not being cleared regularly by the Corporation.Saravanan, a regular walker near the lake, said the problem could be seen at several locations along the stretch. “There are drains at four different points along this road that carry water from nearby residential areas towards the lake. All of them have been affected by solid waste dumping. The Corporation should clear the garbage and take steps to prevent people from using the drains as dumping spots,” he said.An environmental activist said the clogged drains could affect the movement of water and create an unhygienic environment. “Apart from the inlet from Selvachinthamani Tank, these are major channels carrying runoff and wastewater from the surrounding stormwater drains into Periyakulam. Regular cleaning and monitoring are necessary. Open dumping into these drainage channels should be stopped, particularly as they lead into a waterbody,” the activist said.A senior Corporation official said the civic body would take steps to clear the accumulated waste from the drains.
