Google is building a new kind of laptop, and it launches later this year. The Googlebook is the company’s follow-up to the Chromebook, built with the Gemini assistant at its core and made by five of the world’s biggest PC brands. Google confirmed the category in May 2026, and the first devices arrive this fall.

What is the Googlebook?
The Googlebook is a new category of laptops that Google announced on May 12, 2026, at The Android Show: I/O Edition. Alex Kuscher, Google’s Senior Director for Laptops and Tablets, described it as a laptop that combines Android and ChromeOS into one platform. Think of it as the successor to the Chromebook, aimed at a more premium buyer.
Every Googlebook runs a new operating system built on Android. Google has been calling it Aluminium OS internally, but the company told The Verge that this is only a codename, and the official name will be revealed later in 2026. The new system runs Android apps natively and keeps the Chrome browser.
