Days after KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Martin Meyer conducted a media oversight at Sibonginhlanhla Primary School in Waterloo, Verulam, the department announced the termination of the contractor tasked with constructing the school.
The R73.9 million project, which began in September 2023 and was initially due to be completed in August this year, is now expected to be completed in June 2027, with costs rising to R84.3m.
Meyer indicated that the contractor’s cash flow issues have caused significant project delays. Despite receiving multiple notices and agreeing to recovery plans, the contractor failed to meet their commitments. Consequently, the department issued a notice of intention to terminate the contract on July 7, 2026. With that notice now lapsed, the department formally initiated the contract termination process.
In a statement, the department said the termination follows extensive deliberation and consultation with the Bidding and Adjudicating Committee.
