The fire that broke out yesterday after explosions at the EMCO military plant near Tryavna has been brought under control, with firefighters remaining at the site to monitor smoldering areas and prevent the flames from spreading or reigniting. Authorities said there is currently no danger to nearby settlements.
The fire spread from the plant through the Tryavna Balkan toward the village of Stanchov Han after an ammunition warehouse was destroyed in the explosions. Firefighters worked throughout the night on the eastern and western fronts of the blaze, while additional teams remain ready to respond if needed.
Chief Commissioner Alexander Dzhartov, director of the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection, said the remaining smoke was concentrated around isolated smoldering areas, mostly tree stumps and fallen trees.
"The night passed peacefully. Two fire brigade teams worked all night on the eastern and western fronts. At the moment, it can be said that they are under control," Dzhartov said.
He explained that firefighters cannot approach the fire in the same way they would a conventional forest blaze because of the possibility of further explosions. Crews are therefore operating from a safe distance according to emergency plans developed for the site.
