The Municipality of Megara says 282 animals were rescued during last week’s destructive wildfire in Porto Germeno and Attica-Viotia.

Officials said 222 companion animals, 46 farm animals and 14 wild animals were saved, with the municipal stadium serving as the main collection and care point. Of those rescued, 131 animals have returned to their families and 91 are being fostered pending adoption.

Eleven animals were taken to clinics and four died. A hotline handled 86 calls in 24 hours.

Mayor Panagiotis Margetis thanked volunteers, vets, animal welfare groups and residents, saying the priority during the fire was saving lives, not publicity.
