Sir, – Having recently returned from a short trip to the west of Ireland to visit relations, it got me thinking about greenways. I stayed in a campsite in Carrowkeel and cycled into the village of Turlough and further afield to my cousins in Breaffy multiple times.Each time I travelled on boreens surrounded by gorgeous scenery, wildlife, birds and crossed bridges over gently flowing streams. I rarely met any motorised traffic except when crossing a more major road.It occurred to me that some simple signage would encourage locals and tourists alike to choose these kinds of roads for cycling and walking. I am sure every townland in Ireland is blessed with these quiet boreens and lanes. With a bit of input from local cycling and walking groups and rural dwellers we could have a world class network of quiet and safe routes with no need for compulsory purchase orders, expensive design and the arguments that usually accompany greenway proposals. I will admit I used the excellent greenway from the Museum of Country Life in Turlough into the centre of Castlebar.
