Sir, – I was proud to read during the week that my native county is taking a lead in introducing the concept of “quiet roads” to Ireland. And no, it has nothing to do with cross-Border smuggling.
Already a feature of life in Denmark and other countries, “quiet roads” are ones where people are encouraged to travel by means other than cars, with various traffic-calming devices designed to help.
Paradoxically, it’s an urban idea extended to rural environments.
