Frank Mauceri spent three decades preserving the sound of Cleveland’s underground rock scene. His other passion is considerably more serene: a meticulously crafted compound in Northern California‘s wine country, where French antiques, Moroccan tile, Italian windows, a saltwater pool, and sweeping vineyard views create an atmosphere far removed from the raw grit of punk rock.
Mauceri founded Smog Veil Records in Cleveland in 1991 while attending law school. Its catalog included releases by Rocket From the Tombs, Peter Laughner, Mr. Stress Blues Band, and the Dead Boys, whose influential music has since been covered by bands including Guns N’ Roses and Pearl Jam. After three decades preserving Cleveland’s punk and underground-rock legacy, Smog Veil closed in 2021.
