The village of Eklaspur in Jogulamba Gadwal district poured out of their homes as the funeral cortege of Dr Kanike Priyanka was taken to the cremation ground. Dr. Priyanka’s body was handed over to her family after a post-mortem at the Gandhi Hospital, and later shifted to her native village in Jogulamba Gadwal district, where her last rites were performed amidst an outpouring of grief by the family and friends.A senior Health official said the postmortem was completed at around 11.30 a.m., following which the body was handed over to the family.Dr Priyanka was pursuing MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology (DVL) at GSL Medical College in Rajamahendravaram, Andhra Pradesh. She and a friend were travelling on a two-wheeler on August 3 when their vehicle was rammed by a car allegedly driven by intoxicated men near a mall. The Rajamahendravaram police have registered a case of ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ against Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards.Dr Priyanka suffered severe head injuries and was shifted to KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad, for advanced critical care. She was declared brain-dead on August 9.The death has triggered demands for stringent action from doctors’ associations in Telangana, with the medical fraternity calling for a fair and time-bound investigation into the accident.The Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA) demanded the immediate arrest of all those responsible and stringent legal action against them. It also sought a fair, transparent and time-bound investigation, along with the immediate preservation and examination of CCTV footage and all other available evidence.The Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA) also urged the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to personally intervene in the matter and ensure that the investigation is conducted in a fair, transparent and time-bound manner. The HRDA called on the authorities to ensure that the accused are dealt with strictly in accordance with the law and that the maximum punishment permissible is pursued.
