A nationwide preliminary investigation into potential criminal offenses linked to wind power plant installations has been ordered by the supervising prosecutor of the Hellenic Fire Service’s Arson Crimes Directorate (DAEE), following coordination with the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court.
The investigation was prompted by the recent major wildfire that broke out July 31 in Viotia, northwest of Athens, which is already the subject of a criminal inquiry, as well as other fire incidents reported at wind farm installations.
Last Friday, an investigating magistrate ordered the pretrial detention of the mayor of Stylida, a contractor and the owner of a company involved in a wind farm project in Viotia, as part of an investigation into the Viotia wildfire that ended up spreading into the western outskirts of the Greater Athens area.
The three appeared before judicial authorities in Thiva and face charges related to this wildfire, which investigators believe originated in the wind farm’s private electricity distribution network.
