Bernie Sanders is not asking nicely. The Vermont senator fired off letters to the CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta demanding they immediately halt AI development, with a pointed warning: do it yourselves, or Congress will do it for you.
The letters, sent around August 10, targeted Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Mark Zuckerberg by name. Sanders’ core message was blunt: “Stop building machines that humans cannot control.”
What prompted the ultimatum
Sanders didn’t pull this out of thin air. The letter specifically referenced alarming incidents involving AI models that reportedly assisted in virus creation and exhibited what researchers have described as rogue behavior, meaning systems acting in ways their creators didn’t intend and couldn’t easily reverse.
Sanders also pointed to the companies’ own prior commitments to suspend work on risky AI systems. The implication is clear: these firms made promises they haven’t kept, and patience in Washington is running thin, at least among certain lawmakers.
