The Coimbatore District Brick Lorry Owners’ Federation has urged the district administration to take action against local and outstation lorries transporting construction materials with loads exceeding the permitted limits. In a petition to the District Collector, the federation said its members operated their vehicles in accordance with the prescribed load limits under the Motor Vehicles Act. However, some local and outstation lorries were allegedly carrying excess loads and selling construction materials at lower prices, affecting the livelihood of owners who followed the rules. The federation said the Regional Transport Offices and the police were already conducting checks and imposing fines on violators, but several overloaded vehicles continued to operate, particularly at night. It said overloading was damaging tar roads and causing large potholes, besides increasing vehicle maintenance costs. It also posed a safety risk as heavily loaded vehicles could have difficulty braking, potentially leading to accidents, the federation said. The federation identified the Coimbatore–Pollachi, Coimbatore–Palladam, Avinashi–Annur, Coimbatore–Sathyamangalam, Sathyamangalam–Mettupalayam via Sirumugai, Coimbatore–Mettupalayam and Udumalpet–Coimbatore via Sencherimalai routes as major routes used by overloaded vehicles. It urged the authorities to intensify checks and take legal action to prevent such vehicles from operating in the district.
