A’mir Sears could have given himself more time.Another season to grow physically, visit schools and weigh offers. Another season to dominate in high school before moving on to deal with the expectations that come with being one of the nation’s top prospects.Instead, the five-star prospect from Miami sped everything up.Sears reclassified from the 2028 recruiting cycle to the 2027 class, committed to Miami in late July and plans to enroll in January while still 16 years old.And he doesn’t expect to wait long to see the field. “I’m coming to take a spot,” said Sears, a two-way star who will play at Miami Columbus this fall. “I want to play now.”His decision to reclassify comes with obvious benefits — he’ll be well-compensated as a five-star prospect and will be eligible for the NFL Draft one year earlier — and it also removes another year of risk. “What happens if he plays next year and breaks his leg?” Columbus coach Dave Dunn said.Dunn isn’t saying money alone drove Sears’ decision to skip his final year of high school and commit to Miami. Relationships, development, playing time and proximity to home still matter. But in this case, “It’s in his best interest,” Dunn said.Sears’ commitment came shortly after a family tragedy, the death of his oldest brother, Kamari, 23, who was shot and killed on July 4. Sears has his brother’s likeness tattooed on his arm. It reads: “Long Live Mari.”Sears described Kamari as loving, energetic and generous, someone who played catch with him growing up. Kamari often reminded A’mir that his athletic ability offered him a chance to change his family’s future.“He always instilled in me that I have to make it,” Sears said.

Sears was ranked No. 1 in the 2028 cycle in the 247Sports Composite before reclassifying. He's now the No. 11 prospect in the 2027 class.
