A’mir Sears, the dynamic South Florida two-way standout who has been compared to recent Heisman winner Travis Hunter, committed to the University of Miami on Friday after announcing earlier in the week he’s reclassifying into the 2027 recruiting cycle.The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Sears was ranked No. 1 overall in the Class of 2028 in the 247Sports Composite and is now ranked No. 11 in the ’27 class. He starred at West Broward High School last season before transferring to Miami Columbus, the alma mater of Miami coach Mario Cristobal, in the offseason.Sears is the fifth five-star prospect in the Canes’ 2027 class, which ranks in the top five nationally. Only Texas A&M, which has the No. 1 class, has more five-stars (six).Recruiting services have listed Sears primarily as a cornerback, but evaluators believe he has the size, ball skills and route-running ability to become an impact receiver, too.As a sophomore, Sears produced 61 tackles, 11 pass breakups, three interceptions and a forced fumble and caught 42 passes for 942 yards and 11 touchdowns.“I don’t think I’ve had a player who is as talented on both sides of the ball,” former West Broward offensive coordinator Mario Perez said last December after the team lost in the Class 6A state championship game. “He can go to any school in the country to play receiver or in the secondary.”Sears’ commitment represents another major victory for Cristobal’s effort to keep South Florida’s best players from leaving the region. Miami has recruited nationally throughout Cristobal’s tenure, and the Hurricanes have commitments from 12 players outside the state in the class, including the No. 1 players from Alabama, California and South Carolina.
