The area around the National Library improved within days after public outcry over neglected gardens and flowerbeds. With assistance from the Athens municipality, a washingtonia palm was planted, irrigation systems were repaired and watering resumed in the library’s dry grounds.
Officials said the building now has anti-graffiti protection, 24-hour security and a long-term cleaning contract. But funding has not been secured for a full restoration of the historic Vallianeio building, and no permanent arrangement exists for maintaining the surrounding grounds.
The library recently hired a gardener. Concerns also remain about litter, vandalism, homelessness, drug-related debris and public health issues.
