The 34-year-old German keeper, who arrived in Amsterdam on a season-long loan from FC Barcelona announced on August 4, made his competitive debut five days later. A clean sheet on your first day at a new job is a pretty strong opening statement.
A new chapter in Amsterdam
Ter Stegen’s move to Ajax came without a permanent transfer fee or purchase obligation attached.
For ter Stegen, the move carries its own significance. He spent the previous season on loan at Girona, recovering from injury and working his way back to full fitness. A shift to the Eredivisie, and specifically to a club whose DNA revolves around possession-based football, represents a natural fit for a keeper who built his reputation on distribution as much as shot-stopping.
