As the fifth anniversary of Babita Deokaran's assassination coincides with Women’s Day, her family commemorates her legacy with a memorial at the Shri Mariammen Temple.
As August marks the fifth anniversary of the assassination of slain whistle-blower Babita Deokaran, as well as Women’s Day, her family unveiled a memorial monument in her honour at the Shri Mariammen Temple Heritage Site in Mount Edgecombe, where she grew up.
The poignant ceremony paid tribute to Deokaran’s courage and enduring legacy as a woman who stood firmly against corruption and wrongdoing.
Deokaran was assassinated outside her home in Johannesburg in August 2021 after exposing extensive corruption within the Gauteng Department of Health.
Five years on, the memorial serves as a lasting tribute to her life, bravery and commitment to accountability, while honouring a woman whose decision to speak out continues to resonate with communities.
