BackaBuddy's mission to create a lasting tribute to Babita Deokaran's courage.

BABITA Deokaran will return to the place she once worshipped when a monument in her honour is unveiled at the Shri Mariamman Temple in Mount Edgecombe next month.

The bust, which has already been completed, will be unveiled on Women's Day on August 9 by the Mount Edgecombe Arts and Culture Council, an entity of the temple, in honour of the slain whistleblower whose stand against corruption cost her her life.

Jasmine Chunderduth of the Mount Edgecombe Arts and Culture Council said the temple was the obvious home for the monument because of Deokaran's close ties to the area.

"We decided that it would be a fitting way to bring her back home to a place of worship because she hails from the Mount Edgecombe area. She schooled in the Mount Edgecombe area as well. So we said it was only right to bring her to the place where she used to come and worship."
