Talk of early Greek elections this fall has faded after Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis repeatedly insisted voting will wait until spring 2027, reviving speculation about a cabinet reshuffle.
Speculation began July 13, when the European Public Prosecutor’s Office archived cases against seven ruling New Democracy lawmakers tied to the OPEKEPE farm-subsidy scandal, including three former ministers who resigned in April.
Mitsotakis said he sought their resignations out of political sensitivity, calling them “honest politicians” smeared as a “government of defendants.” One, Notis Mitarakis, returned to his party post July 20. Tasos Chatzivasileiou, who resigned in June 2025, came back as deputy foreign minister in June after his case was archived, further fueling reshuffle hopes.
