Bulgaria is strengthening its position as a host of international tennis events, with Plovdiv increasingly emerging as the country’s leading tennis destination. Another ATP Challenger 50 tournament is currently being held in the city, offering a prize fund of nearly 57,000 euros and giving 12 Bulgarian players the opportunity to compete in singles and doubles.
Among the Bulgarian representatives reaching the later stages of the competition are some of the country’s most promising young players. Pyotr Nesterov, who was born in Russia but has represented Bulgaria since childhood and is currently the country’s No. 2 player, will meet Adrian Andreev in the quarterfinals.
Andreev made his ATP tournament debut at the age of 15 and remains one of Bulgaria’s most notable young talents. The quarterfinal matchup guarantees that Bulgaria will have a representative in the semifinals.
"I think it’s both good and bad. For the audience, it might not be so good. For us, Bulgaria, it’s great, because we’ll definitely have a semifinalist," Nesterov said.
George Lazarov is another Bulgarian player competing for a place among the tournament’s top four.
