Ramanathapuram District Police have foiled an attempt to smuggle 297 kg of ganja worth ₹50 lakh to Sri Lanka and arrested two persons near Uchipuli. The seizure was made when a polce patrol team was on duty at Prapanvalasai beach near Uchipuli on Friday night. The police personnel inspected a suspicious van parked there and found 297 kg of ganja in packages inside the vehicle. The value of the seized contraband was estimated to be ₹50 lakh. The police team caught and interrogated two persons standing there. They were identified as Dinesh, 24, from Aatrangarai village and Kalanjeeswaran, 22, from Pillaimadam. During interrogation, it came to light that they brought the ganja from Madurai and planned to smuggle it to Sri Lanka by a country boat from Prapanvalasai beach. Both men were arrested, and a search is under way to nab several others connected with the smuggling bid. District Superintendent of Police G. Chandeesh inspected the ganja packages kept on Ramanathapuram Armed Reserve campus and questioned the arrested persons. Announcing the major haul of the contraband, Mr. Chandeesh told presspersons that 212 drug cases had been registered in the district so far this year, and 670 kg of ganja and 1,800 gm of methamphetamine seized. The bank accounts and properties of the arrested persons were being frozen. He warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in drug smuggling.
