With seasonal changes increasing the risk of fever and other infectious diseases, Erode district administration has stepped up preventive measures, including mosquito-control and sanitation drives.A release from Collector S. Kandasamy said, as part of the measures, the Health Department, in coordination with local bodies, conducted a tyre removal campaign on August 6 to clear unused tyres, which can serve as mosquito breeding sites. On Satrrday (August 8,2026), chlorine levels in drinking water were tested across the district to ensure the supply of safe drinking water.Mosquito larva control measures will be carried out on the premises of all schools and colleges on August 10, along with steps to keep the surroundings clean. The District Health Officer and the Chief Educational Officer provided instructions to school headmasters through a videoconference on Saturday.Local bodies will undertake a mass cleaning drive on August 11 to remove accumulated garbage, unused water storage tanks and other potential mosquito breeding sources. The administration said stagnant rainwater during the monsoon could lead to an increase in mosquito breeding and raise the risk of dengue, chikungunya and malaria. Contaminated drinking water and unhygienic surroundings could also result in the spread of infectious diseases such as diarrhoea.The public has been advised to prevent water stagnation in and around houses and avoid allowing rainwater to collect in unused tyres, coconut shells, plastic containers and flower pots. Drinking water should be stored safely and proper hygiene practices should be followed.People developing fever, headache, body pain, vomiting or diarrhoea have been advised against self-medication and asked to seek medical attention at the nearest government or authorised medical facility.
