For residents of 11th Avenue, Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, the return of electricity meant more than the flick of a switch.
After a prolonged period of darkness, homes and businesses in the community can now enjoy electricity again, following the rehabilitation of a vandalised transformer that had left the neighbourhood without power.
The transformer was vandalised by thieves who stripped it of essential components, plunging the community in the Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo State into darkness.
Residents said their repeated efforts to get the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company to repair the damaged transformer yielded no result, leaving them to endure the consequences of the prolonged blackout.
But after months of waiting, relief came from an unexpected quarter when an Ibadan-based food and confectionery company, Sumal Foods Limited, stepped in to rehabilitate the transformer and restore electricity as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.
